Easy Tteokbokki(Korean Spicy Rice Cake)

Tteokbokki, or spicy rice cake, is a typical Korean street food which has become popular worldwide (probably due to the spread of Korean pop culture). It normally contains rice cakes, fish cakes and gochujang (Korean chili paste). Tteokbokki is simple, yummy and filling. You will make one that tastes exactly like the tteokbokki offered in Korean restaurants with this recipe. I really enjoy eating this while watching Korean drama :)

Ingredients (Serves one):

130g rice cakes(I used frozen ones)
90g fish cakes
20g gochujang/ Korean chili paste*
40g onions
15g scallions
1/2 tbs sugar
1/2 tbs soy sauce
1 cup broth/ water
*: mine is medium hot, adjust amount according to your preference

If using frozen rice cakes, boil them for about 5 min first. Drain the boiled rice cakes and put them in cold water in case they stick. Cut fish cakes into bite size pieces. Slice the onions. Cut scallions into long pieces.

Add broth/ water to a shallow pan.

Dissolve gochujang/ Korean chili paste, then add sugar and soy sauce

Bring to boil, then add all the remaining ingredients: rice cakes, fish cakes, onions and scallions. Switch to medium heat once it starts to boil. Stir occasionally and keep boiling for 15-20 min.

Finally, switch to high heat to thicken the sauce once the rice cakes are fully cooked (soft enough to poke through with a chopstick).

Remove from heat once the sauce becomes thick and shiny. Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped scallions to garnish (Korean restaurants usually use white sesame seeds though).

These rice cakes are chewy, spicy with a touch of sweetness. Simply delicious and filling! Plus, they really taste like the ones in Korean restaurants.

Bon Appétit
