Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is a popular Japanese savory pancake. “Okonomi” literally means “whatever, however you like” in Japanese, and “yaki”, as many of you might already know, means “grill”. So basically you can put whatever you like into okonomiyaki.
Today I’m sharing an easy shrimp okonomiyaki recipe. It’s quick, healthy and filling, not to mention that it is delicious (as usual). Most importantly, it tastes pretty much like those you’ll find in Japanese restaurants.
Ingredients (serves 1):
- 50g all purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 50g (approx) broth/ dahi/ water
- 70g cabbage
- 8-10 shrimps (raw)
- salt to taste
Toppings:
Kewpie Mayonnaise, Okonomi sauce, Katsuobushi (Bonito Flakes)
Instructions:
- Combine and mix egg, flour and broth/water. I used unsalted chicken broth.
- Add cabbage (cut into thin strips), chopped shrimps and salt.
- Whisk together all the ingredients. Add more broth/water if necessary.
- Slightly grease a small non-stick pan, add the mixture once the pan has become very hot. Cook over medium-low heat.
- Flip the okonomiyaki once the bottom is set and has become light-golden in color. Press with a spatula to better transmit heat.
- Cook for another 3-4 min, until both sides are golden.
Finally, top with Kewpie Mayonnaise, Okonomi sauce, Katsuobushi and seaweed powder!
